“International Intellectual Property Strategy and Cross-Domain Innovation Summit” - Seizing Opportunities in Artificial Intelligence and Blockchain
On September 27, 2018, the Ministry of Economic Affairs held the "International Intellectual Property Strategy and Cross-Domain Innovation Summit" with a focus on key intellectual property strategies. The summit centered on the two major technology trends of artificial intelligence and blockchain, cross-domain applications, and market potential analysis. Seven heavyweight experts were invited: Former President of the Licensing Executives Society International (LESI) Prof. Dr. Heinz Goddar, Executive Director of the Office of Technology Licensing at Stanford University Katharine Ku, Vice President of Technology Licensing at Qualcomm John Han, Managing Director of R3 Blockchain Consortium Carl Wegner for Greater China, Head of Artificial Intelligence at Microsoft Greater China and General Manager of Microsoft Taiwan Marketing and Operations Chao Chih-Chung, Convener of Taiwan AI Labs Du Yi-Jin, and Certified Public Accountant at KPMG Taiwan Lee Yu-Ying. They provided guidance for Taiwan's development in these cutting-edge technology fields.
According to the research firm Statista, the global artificial intelligence market is estimated to grow to $89.85 billion by 2025. The number of global artificial intelligence patents also increased significantly from 708 in 2012 to 2,888 in 2016. This indicates that as the application of artificial intelligence becomes more widespread and market demand grows rapidly, the battle for patent layout in the field of artificial intelligence has become a global competitive arena. Therefore, the "International Intellectual Property Strategy and Cross-Domain Innovation Summit" invited Mr. Chao Chih-Chung, Head of Artificial Intelligence at Microsoft Greater China and General Manager of Microsoft Taiwan Marketing and Operations, to deliver a keynote speech on "Tomorrow's Prophecy of Symbiosis with AI - Trends in AI Applications." Mr. Chao Chih-Chung previously assisted Microsoft in developing cloud services and the Internet of Things, and played a crucial role in establishing Microsoft's AI research center in Taiwan. Additionally, the summit invited Mr. Du Yi-Jin, Convener of Taiwan AI Labs, to present a keynote speech on "The Turning Point of T-AI-WAN - Innovative Opportunities for AI in Taiwan." In 2017, Mr. Du Yi-Jin founded the non-governmental, non-profit-oriented Taiwan AI Labs with the goal of promoting the integration of industry, government, and academic resources to enhance Taiwan's AI development capabilities.
In addition to artificial intelligence, another important technology that is considered to have the potential to change the world after the internet is blockchain. According to the research firm Statista, the global blockchain technology market was about $340 million in 2017 and is projected to reach $2.3 billion by 2021. While the blockchain technology market may not seem as massive as artificial intelligence, it has the potential to influence currency, commerce, and even the world's operations. In the summit, Lee Yu-Ying, the lead accountant for digital industries at KPMG Taiwan, delivered a keynote speech on "Blockchain Application Blueprint - New Trends and Applications in Blockchain." Ms. Lee Yu-Ying specializes in digital operations and innovation, data value analysis, financial industry regulations, and risk compliance, making her a well-known expert in blockchain and Fintech in Taiwan. Additionally, the summit also invited Carl Wegner, APAC Director of R3, to present a keynote speech on "Blockchain Cross-Border Subversion - Cross-Domain Applications of Blockchain Technology." With over 30 years of financial management experience, Carl Wegner is dedicated to helping the blockchain industry better comply with financial regulatory requirements.
