Utilization of Coal Ash in Construction Works

Coal ash, referred to as coal combustion residuals, contains mineral components including silicon, aluminum, iron, calcium and other elements. Through appropriate and protective manner, coal ash can be used and can produce environmental and economic benefits.
Fly ash fineness is similar to cement. It has pozzolanic characteristic and can react with cement hydration products to produce strength. Through years of research, Taiwan Power Company (Taipower) has recycled and reused coal ash in various ways – use fly ash in concrete structures, use bottom ash in pipe trench backfill, road base and subbase, and dike projects. More than this, Taipower has further extended the applications to marine projects with less structural strength requirements. By substituting bottom ash for natural sands, fly ash for cement and fine aggregates, it reduces the use of natural resources and virgin materials.
This year, Taiwan Power Research Institute (TPRI) collected cases and practical applications for reuse of coal ash, put together the characteristics, environmental compatibility and engineering properties of coal ash, and compiled Coal Ash Marine Engineering Application Manual. This Manual should be used as a practical handbook and a work of reference for people who will use coal ash in marine engineering work. Hope to increase the breadth of coal ash resource utilization.
Moreover, TPRI also uses coal ash to develop green building material. For example, the production of high-pressure coal ash bricks. TPRI hopes that such bricks can be adopted in Taipower’s construction projects, which will help to build a green corporate image of Taipower and show its determination toward circular economy and a sustainable future.
