Selection of YY supermale Nile tilapia Oreochromis niloticus (L.) and its applied to commercial production of all male progenies
Nile tilapia Oreochromis niloticus (L.) is the largest and fastest growing species of the tilapia. However, as most fish farmers use androgenic hormones to induce the production of all male progenies, doubts on food safety are raised for this fish. Supermale Nile tilapia is the research result from more than 12 years of experiments, where androgenic hormones are not used in the production process. Due to the rapid growth and high meat yield of the all male Nile tilapia, it can effectively lower production costs and enhance the international competitiveness of the industry. This is also a new trend in the development of the tilapia industry in the world.
At present, the main tilapia breed for cultivation in Taiwan are the all male hybrids tipilia(Oreochromis niloticus♀ × Oreochromis aureus♂). iThe whole process of production takes about 14-15 months to reach a kilogram, and the meat yield is only 31-32%.
The all male Nile tilapia produced by the YY supermale Nile tilapia can grow to a kilogram in only 8-9 months, and the meat yield can reach 37-39%.
As this breed of fry is neither transgenic nor genetically modified and no male hormone is used to control the male ratio, no safety concern about food and ecological safety is raised.
While the growth rate and meat yield are both better than the current all male hybrid tilapia, it can effectively reduce production costs and enhance the international competitiveness of the tilapia industry.
