Hyporheic flow is the source of water that flows or is stored in the gravel bed below the river. It has the advantages of fast replenishment speed, sufficient water volume, and low turbidity. In addition, it is applied underground, and will not damage the surface hydrology and landform. It can reduce the risk of water shortage during the high turbidity period of the raw water, stabilize regional water quality.
Hyporheic flow is an important backup water source during periods of high turbidity. Take Gaoping River as an example. Ordinarily, take Gaoping River first, 100％ supplied by surface water. During periods of high turbidity, surface water supply is reduced to 18％, and hyporheic flow and cross-regional water support are activated.
During drought, the stream bed is dry and the surface water is reduced, the hyporheic flow can still be drawn from the gravel under the stream bed. We suffer severe drought in 2021. To alleviate the plight of water shortage, Taiwan Water Corporation and Water Resources Agency promote hyporheic flow in Houlong River, Daan River, and Wu River areas respectively. Water intake is about 75,000 CMD.
