Sustainability | Green Energy & EnvironmentUnder the carbon reduction concept of promoting distributed energy resources, it is proposed to combine renewable energy to form small distributed power plants and connect them with electric vehicle charging piles (V2G), thereby becoming virtual power plants for nearby communities. Additionally, it can further cooperate with household renewable energy storage equipment (RES) and demand response (DR) to achieve the substantial significance of a perfect smart microgrid. In civil society, local citizen power plants (citizen engagement) are also used to integrate various sizes of distributed energy resources (DER) through virtual power plant clients. An energy management system (EMS) based on the Internet of Things (IoT) is used to regulate energy storage systems (ESS) in various locations to compensate for the intermittency of renewable energy power generation, reduce the burden of reserve capacity, and help balance the overall power system. This project implements distributed energy at the Jinshanlin campus of National Quemoy University, combining local revitalization and building energy efficiency grading to establish a zero-carbon campus, and then achieves the ultimate goal of the sustainable campus. In summary, the highlights of the results of this case are as follows: 1.Planning practical operations and big data database analysis for a low-carbon community distributed energy management system. 2.Developing smart photovoltaic energy storage systems and monitoring software for electric motorcycle charging and swapping stations. 3.Using the demonstration site as a model to study the feasibility of distributed smart green energy communities in the Kinmen area. 4.Artificial intelligence prediction models such as Linear Regression, SVR, XGB, and LSTM are used to conduct short-, medium-, and long-term power generation forecasts.
Sustainability | Green Energy & EnvironmentIn 2020, a 100-hectare rice paddy area in Guanshan Township, Taitung County, transitioned to organic cultivation. After three cropping seasons, the rice black bug (RBB) (Scotinophara lurida) population surged, causing significant yield losses for farmers, with some experiencing up to 90% losses and an average loss exceeding 30%. The Taitung District Agricultural Research and Extension Station (TTDARES) has isolated a highly virulent strain of the entomopathogenic fungus (Metarhizium anisopliae), strain TDMA01, which has been deposited in a patent strain collection. Field trials conducted with regulatory approval have confirmed that TDMA01 effectively controls RBBs, infecting both adults and nymphs, and leading to a significant increase in yield. Two field demonstration events have been held to showcase the efficacy of this biocontrol agent. The TDMA01 strain holds great promise for development as a microbial pesticide.
Sustainability | AgricultureTo respond to the carbon neutrality trend and the three major challenges in resources, technology, and capital investment, CSC established the China Steel Energy Conservation and Carbon Reduction and Carbon Neutrality Promotion Task Force in February 2021. We are committed to taking concrete actions for environmental protection and addressing climate change, aiming to achieve short- and medium-term goals of a 7% reduction by 2025 and a 22% reduction by 2030, with the long-term goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050. (The reduction targets are referenced against the base year of 2018.)
Sustainability | Green Energy & Environment"TSC has screened and domesticated microalgae and bacteria to establish an algae-bacteria symbiosis (ABS) system. This ABS is highly efficient in photosynthesis to fix carbon dioxide, and its short period of growth and endurance to severe environments resulted in extensive survival in various types of water conditions. It has demonstrated its effectiveness in treating wastewater with different COD (300-1,200 mg/L) and ammonia nitrogen concentrations (800-900 mg/L). The best degradation rates achieved were COD: 11.1% - 48% and ammonia nitrogen: 37% - 48%. The carbon fixation rate was 0.15g/L/d. This suggests that the system could acquire nutrient sources from wastewater, fix carbon, achieve wastewater purification, and enable resources to be reused. It is a promising technology for wastewater reuse and carbon fixation."

This enables more stable production and diversified product development, fostering greater commercial potential for Wendan pomelos.
Sustainability | AgricultureRoot rot caused byRhizoctonia solani is a major threat to soybean production, often exacerbated by continuous cropping practices. Conventional reliance on chemical pesticides for seed treatment can lead to undesirable residues. This technology offers a sustainable solution by utilizing a highly effective strain of Trichoderma asperellum, TMU-g27, selected for its strong antagonistic activity against R. solani, and its ability to colonize soybean roots. A novel seed coating formulation incorporating TMU-g27 suspension concentrate has been developed, demonstrating excellent biocontrol efficacy against soybean root rot in field trials. This technology is now ready for commercialization, providing a promising alternative to chemical pesticides, reducing environmental impact, and enhancing food safety.

Sustainability | Green Energy & EnvironmentUsing direct current to act on chlorine ions in the water to form chlorine gas, which then reacts with the ammonia nitrogen in the wastewater. The ammonia nitrogen wastewater ,therefore, can be decomposed into environmentally harmless nitrogen (anode). Meanwhile, through optimizing the design of the module, the hydrogen in the cathode can reach a recycle level, realizing green hydrogen that can be used for power generation. To put circular economy in practice. This system is suitable for treating ammonia nitrogen wastewater of medium to high concentration and is applicable across various industries, such as the display panel industry and the semiconductor industry. The treatment process is highly cost-effective, with the treatment of one kilogram of ammonia costing only 64.8 NTD (calculated based on an industrial electricity rate of 3 NTD per kWh).

Sustainability | AgricultureTSC started as a sugar producer and its sugar-making process has successfully implemented both biological and technical cycles in the circular economy. The sugar byproducts are fully utilized; for example, bagasse is used as biomass fuel for co-generation, filter mud and molasses are turned into fertilizer for farmland, and the vapor from a boiler can be recycled for reuse. By reusing the byproducts, TSC sugar mills achieve a fully closed-loop circular economy. In 2023, Shanhua Sugar Factory partnered with the National Atomic Research Institute (NARI) to adopt Bioenergy with Carbon Capture and Utilization (B ECCU) technology, utilizing alkali solution to react with CO2 in the flue gas to produce sodium bicarbonate for food, feed, medical, and detergent applications. The preliminary field test results indicated that the pilot equipment could capture 10 kg of CO2 daily, achieving a capture and utilization rate of over 95% to produce 20 kg of carbonate. TSC continues the collaboration and plans to implement the technology in its other sugar mills for on-site verification. Meanwhile, after scaling up the equipment, TSC will assess the subsequent economic benefits and applications, helping the sugar industry march toward carbon neutrality.
