Shortage of safe drinking water is an issue faced by disaster victims. A NTU patented ‘absorption-disinfection’ cryogel technology, never been employed for same product category, has been developed to purify fresh water sources or flood water into safe drinkable water. Cryogel is comparatively lightest in weight for easy deployment; besides providing cost-effectiveness, repeatable usage, ease-of-use, high purification efficacy, and rapid purification. The key of the technology is the specialized polymeric adsorbent material with well-dispersed silver nano-particles. It absorbs dirty water up to 100 times of its dry weight in seconds and can be squeezed to release drinkable water with no odor/taste issue. The gel not only disinfects pathogenic micro-organisms, but also absorbs harmful substances like heavy metals or organic contaminants. The combined functions ensure the robustness of purification efficacy, especially when actual water chemistry is complex and could vary across locations. By incorporating the cryogel composites inside a squeezable package, the point-of-use water purifier can be produced. Apart from disaster relief and emergency preparedness, cryogel purifier can also be used by outdoor adventurers, military personnel, and for emergency preparedness. The potential to address different markets is made possible given the flexibility to fabricate cryogel into different form factors to suit different product designs.
