mmWave CMOS IC-Based RIS Array and Base Station Collaborative Communication Technology

Technology Introduction:
To enable high-data-rate, low-latency, and wideband communications for B5G/6G systems, millimeter-wave signals must overcome the challenges of signal blockage and limited coverage. ITRI has developed a scalable millimeter-wave CMOS IC-based Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface (RIS) array module. Each array element integrates an in-house developed CMOS RIS chip with power consumption of less than 1 mW for dual-polarized reflection phase control. The module can be configured into RIS arrays of different sizes for various communication scenarios, thereby successfully steering and optimizing signal propagation and extending base station coverage. ITRI has also developed a base station collaborative RIS communication technology. Based on channel state information reported by the user terminal, the base station can dynamically steer the reflected beams of the RIS module. Even while the user is moving, this technology enables reliable communication quality, paving the way for RIS to become a new network element in future 6G networks.
Industrial Applications:
The proposed low-power, dual-polarized CMOS IC RIS array technology enables intelligent control of electromagnetic wave reflections, effectively overcoming the challenges of signal blockage and limited coverage in millimeter-wave communications. It has broad application potential in 6G base stations, smart factories, smart cities, private networks, and high-speed wireless access, enhancing communication quality and coverage.
