Propagation and Cultivation Techniques of Litsea cubeba

Listed cubeba, also known as “Maqaw”, is a kind of tree of the genus Litsea in the family Lauraceae. Because the aboriginal living area coincides with the area where Litsea cubeba is distributed, Litsea cubeba has been closely related to Taiwan's aboriginal culture since ancient times. It is a very special spice in aboriginal culture. However, the germination rate of Litsea cubeba is only about 10% under natural conditions, and the tree vigor declines after 3-5 years, then it must be replanted. At present, the number of wild seedlings is insufficient to meet the planting needs of tribal people. Therefore, the Hualien District Agricultural Research and Extension Station developed the " Propagation and Cultivation Techniques of Litsea cubeba ", which uses physical methods to crack the seed structure and chemical treatments to increase the seed germination rate by 70%. With subsequent soil mixture and fertilizer preparation, seedlings can be propagated in large quantities to meet market demand and forest restoration.
