Technologies for the mass production of parasitoid wasp capsules and the airdrop using unmanned aerial vehicles
In order to solve the time-consuming and labor-intensive problem in the application of Trichogramma wasps, Hualien District Agricultural Research and Extension Station cooperated with Chinese Culture University and Taiwan Sugar Corporation to develop a new type of parasitoid wasp capsule made out of environmentally friendly materials to replace the traditional parasitoid wasp strips. In addition, automatic packaging equipment has also been developed to mass-produce parasitoid wasp capsules in a labor-saving mechanical procedure. In order to save manpower in field operations and accurately release the capsules, the technology of intelligently releasing parasitoid wasp capsules by unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) has also been developed. Compared with the traditional method of manually nailing wasp strips, the capsule release with UAV can be 6 times more efficient than the manual release. The application was helpful in controlling fall armyworm (Spodoptera frugiperda) and corn borer (Ostrinia furnacalis) in large areas as well as reducing pesticide usage. This technology has obtained 1 patent and it completely connects the industrial chain of natural enemies.
