Universal Synthesis of Atomically-Thin Metal Dichalcogenide Libraries

Compared to the bulk counterparts, two-dimension transition-metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) show extraordinary physical properties including 2D quantum-spin Hall effect, 1D charge density waves, valley polarization, etc. However, only a limited number of 2D TMDs have been successfully synthesized. The proposed molted-salt-assisted chemical vapour deposition method is capable of synthesizing a system of more than 40 distinct 2D metal chalcogenides, including binary, ternary and quaternary 2D compounds. This approach will pave the way for the multi-disciplinary exploration of the landscape of 2D materials across materials science, physical and various applications in photovoltaics, semiconductors and catalysis.
