TSC Carbon Reduction in Agriculture and Caron Sequestration in Afforestation

(1)Carbon Reduction in Agriculture
Sugarcane is a C4 plant capable of absorbing and storing a large amount of CO2. During the sugarcane fallow period, from March to June every year, TSC grows a leguminous green manure crop, Sunn hemp, on its self-operated farms, with a total planted area estimated to be 518.73 acres by the end of 2023. Meanwhile, sugarcane bagasse, filter mud, and dried swine manure are applied to the farms to reduce the use of chemical fertilizers and enhance soil fertility and carbon sequestration. TSC is actively cooperating with academic institutions and industrial partners to establish a baseline for soil carbon storage in sugarcane fields, engage in a carbon capture projects, and apply for international soil carbon sequestration certification. It aims to make sugar industry less carbon emission, better carbon sequestration, and more environmentally friendly.

(2)Caron Sequestration in Afforestation
TSC has 10,402 acres of flat land afforestation which is estimated to provide about 116,000 tons carbon dioxide equivalent (tCO2e) carbon sequestration benefits annually. TSC has been taking inventory of forest carbon rights (about 2,833 acres), developing a storage database, carrying out "Carbon sink project in the core area of the Linhousilin Forest Park," and cooperating with FANCA in the ESG certification program, to speed up carbon sequestration in afforestation and to move toward the goal of net-zero emissions.

TAIWAN SUGAR CORPORATION
