Footwear such as sneakers are extremely difficult to recycle because they often contain several different types of materials, many of which are stitched or glued together. This means the overall recycling process can become rather difficult and time-consuming. In order to improve the process and foster sustainability, Covestro are showcasing several pairs of trendy and functional shoes that have been made from a single type of material – Thermoplastic Polyurethane (TPU).
Worth a special mention are our concept sneakers from the Desmopan® eco range which contain TPU types and whose carbon content originates partly from biomass. Other types including Desmopan® 37385A are made from polyethercarbonate polyols, which Covestro produces from CO2 using innovative technology and sells under the name cardyon®.
TPU material has a wide range of properties that can be used in various parts of shoes, without the need to compromise on quality and design. These parts include the uppers, midsoles, outsoles, logos, toe caps, heels and eyelets, thus greatly improving the recycling process.
