The tea-based beverage market in Taiwan is booming, with annual sales of more than 30,000 tons of tea, which produce considerable amount of tea waste. Tea waste disposal has become an issue for its high water content, inconvenient transportation, and difficult to incineration. In particular, it bothers the bottled tea companies when the freight charges are rising yearly. Tea Research and Extension Station, COA has cooperated with Food Industry Research and Development Institute to develop the microbial fermentation technology of tea by-product (tea residue). By utilizing the specific microbes with processing technology, the microflora of tea residue can be stabilized. The dominant microbes are able to inhibit the growth of spoilage microbes, and transform them into bedding additives with a pleasant aroma. These fermented tea residues can be used to produce poultry house bedding and cat litter additives, and have been confirmed that they can not only reduce fecal odor but also have antibacterial functions through animal experiments. Thus, reusing the tea residues will achieve the goal of recycling.
