PECOLA was named the CES 2020 Innovation Awards Honoree in the Smart Home category.
PECOLA, Personal Companion for Older People Living Alone, is an autonomous vehicle consisting of a camera, a WiFi antenna, an auto phone dialing system, and microphones, which were specifically designed for ambient intelligence. The camera is used to provide video streaming as input for AI models for face detection, expression recognition, diet analysis, physical activity assessment, and fall detection. Once a fall or abnormity is detected, the system will reach either EMTs or an emergency contact. The WiFi antenna exploits wireless signals for easy collection of information, making the measurements and calculations of breathing and heart rate more precise. An array of small microphones is incorporated for multidirectional audio listening, collecting audio data for the AI model to spot speech keywords for emotion analysis. For autonomous vehicle navigation, a small two-wheel base, equipped with multiple obstacle detection sensors (including a 2D Lidar), is designed for convenient maneuvering in home environments.

PECOLA (Personal Companion for Older People Living Alone) is a companion robot incorporating ambient intelligence for seniors living alone.
With ambient intelligence as its core, PECOLA includes multiple AI functions & patents:
• Sleep Analysis: WiFi-based breathing and heart rate detection technology;
• Diet Analysis: Video-based food portion change, fresh versus leftover, specific dish name (currently Chinese food only), and nutrient-content detection;
• Activity Analysis: Four human poses (standing, sitting, bending and lying), video-based fall detection technology, interval walking training program for blood sugar control;
• Emotional Analysis: Video- and voice-based detection of emotions: happy, angry, sad, surprise, fear, disgust, contempt, and neutral emotions. If abnormity is detected, the system reaches either emergency medical technicians or an emergency contact.
