Novel Lightweight High Performance Heterogeneous Structure Medium Entropy Alloys

Lightweight materials are the hot issues in the materials community. The strength is the main concern of the lightweight materials. Recently, high/medium entropy alloys concept were proposed by Prof. Yeh. We design lightweight (5 g/cm3) Ti-rich alloys (Ti-65) based on the ternary phases developed by our own CALPHAD databases. Ti-65 alloys possess the tensile yield strength of 950 MPa and excellent ductility of 30%. Compared with the commercial Ti-6Al-4V alloys (YS 950MPa, EL 18%) widely used in aerospace areas, Ti-65 alloys demonstrate promising ductility. For employing the heterogeneous mechanism, we conduct the thermomechanical treatment on Ti-65 to obtain the heterogeneous structured alloys. Heterogeneous structured Ti-65 alloy possesses excellent tensile properties (YS 1240 MPa, TS 1510 MPa and EL 25%) and ultra-high specific strength of 250 MPa·cm3/g. To promote these alloys, we produce the large dimension alloys and club head is also produced in cooperation with Fusheng.

We design a novel non-equiatomic Ti-rich medium entropy alloys by CALPHAD. Cast Ti-65 alloys demonstrate tensile yield strength of 950 MPa and ductility of 30%. Heterogeneous structured Ti-65 alloys demonstrate extraordinary tensile properties (YS: 1240, TS: 1510MPa, EL: 25%). Some of outstanding hetero-structured works in world class journals reached the specific strength of 144 MPa·cm3/g, ductility of 25% (Science) and 254 MPa·cm3/g, 13% (Science). This novel lightweight heterogeneous structured Ti-65 alloy possesses ultra-high specific strength of 247 MPa·cm3/g a excellent ductility of 25%.

Lightweight materials with high strength and ductility are the goals for industrial application. This novel lightweight (5 g/cm3) heterogeneous structured Ti-65 alloy possesses ultra-high specific strength of 247 MPa·cm3/g and ductility of 25%. The extraordinary properties of this alloy undoubtedly dominate lightweight materials community. We produced the large dimension Ti-65 ingots and face of club head in cooperation with Fusheng to demonstrate the promising potential on commercial commodities. This work will focus on the aerospace areas, transportation and high additional valued products.
