Magnetic and 2D metallic Nanoparticle Arrays of Surface-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy (SERS) Detection Platform for Environmental-Biomedical Sensing

A portable and magnetic surface Raman-enhanced scattering (SERS) nanoparticle arrays platform would be developed for magnetic separation and SERS detection of environmental, water, and biomolecules samples. It is very simple and rapid platform with portable Raman spectroscopy to detect molecules without labelling the fluorescence dye, and the limit of detection concentration is lower than 10-8 M. In the part of magnetic SERS substrate, flexible 2D nanosheets (graphene, nanoclay, and MoS2) with Ag (or Au) nanoparticles were used as SERS substrates and then immobilized Fe3O4 magnetic nanoparticles to form magnetic 2D nanoparticle sheets for magnetically capturing samples, such as biomolecules (adenine), environmental water pollutants (malachite blue), bacteria (E. coli), tumor cells, or virus (COVID-19). Further, the resulting samples were conducted to portable Raman spectroscopy for SERS detection. Moreover, Au-Ag nano-islands SERS biochips by thermal evaporation would be developed.

The magnetic 2D nanosheets exhibit the magnetic separating and collecting behaviors. After applied the external magnetic field, it is easy to capture and concentrate the samples (bacteria, virous, water toxicants). Furthermore, SERS effects produced by the noble metallic nanoparticles/2D nanosheets would be used to detect the samples by Raman spectroscopy. The samples of environmental toxicants and biomolecules can be rapidly differentiated by the sensitive and reproducible SERS signals, which can solve the time-consuming for the sample pretreatment.

The magnetic SERS detecting platform can not only magnetically separating environmental toxicants and biomolecules, but also rapidly detecting them by SERS technique, for example, (1) biomolecules: microbes, antibiotic resistant bacteria, virus (COVID-19), DNA (adenine), -carotene; (2) food safety and drugs: copper chlorophyll, narcotic (amphetamine), food toxicants (Aflatoxin B1); (3) water toxicants: malachite green, heavy metal ions detection.
