CSC has planned three main axes for the development of hydrogen metallurgy technology in blast furnaces, including (1) low-carbon burden addition, (2) hydrogen-rich blast furnace injection, and (3) top gas enrichment and recirculation. To achieve these goals, CSC has collaborated with 12 academic institutions in Taiwan, including National Cheng Kung University and National Taiwan University, involving at least 25 professors, to propose the "Development of Low-Carbon Ironmaking Technology" research project, which was approved by the Ministry of Science and Technology for implementation in November 2023. Regarding low-carbon burden addition, CSC has completed tests on adding self-produced direct reduced iron (DRI) and achieved a breakthrough, making it a regular practice. To expand the carbon reduction effect, CSC has imported 6,000 tons of hot briquetted iron (HBI) from abroad for related tests, with the aim of investing in foreign production of HBI using hydrogen-rich gases for reduction and shipping the HBI back to CSC's blast furnaces.
China Steel Corporation (CSC), located in Kaohsiung City, was founded in December 1971. With annual crude steel production of 10 million metric tonnes, CSC’s main products include plates, bars, wire rods, hot and cold rolled coils, electrogalvanized coils, electrical steel coils, and hot-dip galvanized coils. The domestic market takes roughly 58.9% of CSC’s production and the exports take the remaining 41.1%. CSC is the largest steel company in Taiwan with market share of more than 50% and export products mainly to Southeast Asia, Europe and Japan.
