They are isotropic mixtures of oils, surfactants, and sometimes cosolvents, which spontaneously form fine oil-in-water emulsions or microemulsions when exposed to aqueous environments like those in the gastrointestinal tract. This emulsification increases the solubility and absorption of the drug, improving its bioavailability.
