In the highly competitive market of personal care products, performing tests on the products are essential in product development. Animal study is currently widely banned, and current commercial skin mimics are expensive yet their performance is still far from real skin. Fabricated from a natural protein, silk artificial stratum corneum (SC) have similar keratin structure with real skin stratum corneum, the key component for skin barrier. Compared with other artificial-skin testing platform, silk artificial SC is more relevant to real skin in terms of skin-related products testing results and can also be customized for various skin types (dry/oily/combined). Compared to commercially available products, silk artificial SC can recreate the interaction of personal care products with skin by tuning the surface property, topology, pH and absorption behavior similar to real skin. The fabrication process is all water-based and green process. It can be used as an economical solution for quantitative personal care products tests with high consistency and reliability.
