Manufacturing method and testing technology of new domestic separator for flow battery

To achieve the 2025 green energy goal (20% renewable energy), flow batteries with buffering and regulating functions has great potential for development. Separator is one of the key materials, which affects the performance of efficiency and long-term stability. The new domestic separator based on porous membrane uses the pore size to provide selectivity between vanadium ions and protons, which is different from the ion exchange membrane that uses mutual attraction of charges to conduct proton transmission.
At present, the separator widely used in vanadium redox flow batteries is the ion exchange membrane of Nafion series produced by Chemours (formerly known as DuPont). However, using Nafion membrane accounts for 30% of the total cost of the stack. Its high cost couldn’t meet market requirements. Therefore, low-cost porous filter substrates have been developed to improve performance through pore size optimization and hydrophilic modification, expecting to be adopted as separators for vanadium flow batteries. The domestic separator is estimated to be 50% of the price of the Nafion series.
